Terry and I assembled the new beds before he left for two weeks in California.  We have placed them in the garden and I will level and align them before adding the compost.  Once that is done, I will place a water tube in each one and build a support structure for the beans etc. This will add an additional 5 beds to the garden and give us better control of the peas and beans.  I am looking for help in Terry’s absence.  The  filling of the beds is at lease a two-man job.  I hate to kill the grass within the beds.  I’d like to remove it and place it elsewhere in the garden.  I decided not to use a weed barrier at the bottom of  each bed to control the root intrusion.  The beds are only 5.5 inches deep and I think the crops need a deeper root zone.  We will just have to double dig the beds every couple years.

WE HAVE A BUTTERFLY GARDEN

Each year for the past several years I have planted and divided a patch of fennel.  I don’t know why as I have tried to eat it several times or use it as a seasoning without success.  It does grow well and makes nice clumps of filigree leaved yellow blooms.   This year we had three large clumps.  Note the past tense.  These plants were discovered by the black swallowtail butterfly (Papilio polyxenes asterius) and chosen as a food source for her larva which have reduced them to mere stumbles.

UPDATE

I have 12 eggplant starts that I am going to place in the garden to see if we have enough time to grow them out.  We need to weed the second potato bed as well as the asparagus and the area by the blueberries.  It is almost time to plant the fall garden.

The new beds will add a lot of planting space. You made more boxes than I expected. I wish I could help but now my foot is in a cast trying to get the toe to heal so I can’t move much and I have very little strength anyway. My biggest exercise any more is to feed the birds.

My friend Ron Cox in Denver purchased a batch of worms that will hatch into Painted Lady butterflies. He built a many sided device in which the butterflies hatched in a the garden at his assisted living home. It was such a popular project, the home paid for another batch.
