I sent this email to my co-op members but need to send it to all the blog members also so you can keep up with what is going on.

I WILL BE UPDATING EVERYONE ON THE FALL GARDEN WHILE CHRIS IS GONE. IT PROMISES TO BE A REALLY NICE ONE. I PLANTED BOTH MUSTARD AND MUCILAGE TODAY AND WILL PLANT MORE ONION SEED AS WELL AS A RE-PLANT OF THE CARROTS AND SWISS CHARD. I REMEMBER WHY THE SPROUTS COMING UP IN THE ONION ROW DID NOT LOOK LIKE ONION. THEY ARE RADISH WHICH I PLANTED TO MARK THE ONION SEEDLINGS. THE ONION SEEDLINGS WHICH ARE COMING UP NOW ARE SPRING ONIONS. CHRIS, WERE THE MALABAR SPINACH LEAVES GOOD? I NEED TO TRY THEM COOKED. I HAVE ONLY EATEN THEM RAW. I REMOVED THE SWEET POTATO VINES TONIGHT AS THERE WERE NO MORE “TATERS”. AS WE SAW YESTERDAY, THE SECOND PLANTING OF PEAS HAVE SPROUTED (100%) AND ARE REACHING FOR THE NEW FENCE SUPPORTS THAT DAVIS AND I INSTALLED. THE VARIOUS VARIETIES OF SQUASH ARE DOING VERY WELL AND RACING THE COLD WEATHER. I HOPE WE GET SOME BEFORE A FROST COMES. I PICKED THE PEPPERS AGAIN TONIGHT AS THEY CONTINUE TO BLOOM. I AM GOING TO MULCH THEM BECAUSE IF WE DON’T GET A KILLING FROST (WHICH HAPPENS ON OCCASION) WE MIGHT GET PEPPERS ALL WINTER. I ALSO PICKED A TRIAL WATERMELON – HAVE NOT CUT IT YET BUT WILL GIVE YOU THE RESULTS ONCE I DO. WE HAVE AS MANY AS A DOZEN MELONS WHICH MAY RIPEN BEFORE IT GETS COLD. I TRAPPED THE OPOSSUM THAT WAS EATING THE MELONS BUT IT DIED BEFORE I COULD TRANSPORT IT TO ANOTHER LOCATION – AN ILLEGAL ACTIVITY AS WE ARE SUPPOSED TO DISPATCH ALL TRAPPED RACCOONS AND OPOSSUMS. I FINISHED WORKING ON THE BLACKBERRY SUPPORT TODAY AND NEED HELP HANGING THE EXTENSION WIRE ON TOP. I WILL BE IN THE GARDEN IN THE MORNING SHOULD TERRY OR DAVIS HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO COME BY. ABOUT 9:00 AM. I WILL FINALLY PLACE THE NEW CUCUMBER RAISED BED NEXT WEEK AND WILL NEED ASSISTANCE FILLING IT WITH COMPOSTED TOPSOIL FROM THE EAST SIDE OF THE GARDEN. I WILL PURCHASE THE $100 WORTH OF WATERING SUPPLIES WITH WHICH I WILL CONSTRUCT THE IRRIGATION SYSTEM TO THE NEW PART OF THE GARDEN. DAVIS IS TRYING TO GET A BID ON THE COST OF TAKING THE ELECTRICITY INTO THE GARDEN SO WE CAN USE OUR ELECTRICAL TOOLS WITHOUT OVERHEATING THEM WITH LONG EXTENSION CORDS.
I WILL BE BUILDING RETAINING FORMS AROUND THE BLACKBERRIES AND THE TOMATO/MELON BED WHICH WILL MAKE THEM RAISED BEDS AND MUCH EASIER TO MAINTAIN. I WANT TO TRANSPLANT ONE OF THE REGULAR PAWPAW TREES FROM THE NORTH SIDE OF THE GARDEN OVER TO THE NEW PAWPAWS I HAVE PLANTED ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE GARDEN. DAVIS AND I WILL GET SOME MORE OF HIS SHREDDED MULCH AND PLACE IT AROUND THE BLUEBERRIES TO COMBAT THE UNCONTROLLABLE WEED GROWTH AND WE WILL FINISH OFF THE GARDEN WITH CYPRESS MULCH.
OUR GARDEN GETS BETTER AND MORE IMPROVED AS TIME GOES ON. IT WILL BE A MAJOR PRODUCTION AREA IN A LITTLE WHILE. I HOPE TO GET EXPERT ADVICE FROM THE SOIL BIOLOGIST THAT DAVIS KNOWS. THAT WILL BE VERY HELPFUL. WE HAVE THE SPACE, THE LABOR, PART OF THE KNOWLEDGE AND NOW NEED THE SOIL INFORMATION TO TOP OFF OUR EFFORTS. ALL THIS WILL MAKE FOR A LONG TERM COMMUNAL GARDEN EFFORT FOR US. I’M THINKING YEARS HERE AS WE ALL MAY NOT LIVE FOREVER BUT THE GARDEN CAN.
PEGGY, HAVE YOU GIVEN ANY THOUGHT TO GETTING THE BEES UP AND GOING? I GUESS IT IS TIME TO PLACE OUR NUC ORDER. IS THERE A WAY TO GET MORE THAN 3 LBS OF BEES? DON’T YOU THINK IT WILL BE BEST TO GET A MARKED QUEEN WITH HER WINGS CUT THIS TIME?  WE DON’T WANT TO HAVE HER FLY OFF WITH THE GANG AGAIN.
CITRUS IS 2 TO 3 WEEKS AWAY FROM THE BEGINNING OF “TOP SWEET”. THIS CONDITION WILL BE HELD TILL THE END OF FEBRUARY AND I HAVE FOUND THAT IT IS BEST TO LEAVE THE FRUIT ON THE TREE UNTIL YOU WANT TO EAT IT. IT STAYS FRESHER AND KEEPS LONGER. YOU ARE GOING TO REALLY ENJOY EATING TRULY FRESH CITRUS.
THE CHICKENS HAVE DROPPED THEIR EGG PRODUCTION AS IS EXPECTED FOR THE DECLINING LIGHT PERIOD BUT I AM STILL GETTING 6 TO 8 EGGS A DAY WHICH HAS THE RESULT OF MAKING GLENDA SUGGEST THAT I BUTCHER SOME CHICKENS OR SELL THEM. I KEEP TELLING HER THE EGGS ARE JUST AN ADDED BENEFIT AS THE MANURE IS WHAT WE ARE IN THE CHICKEN BUSINESS FOR. JUST TO LET YOU KNOW WHERE SHE IS COMING FROM…THERE ARE 7 DOZEN EGGS IN THE REFRIGERATOR, 33 ON THE KITCHEN COUNTER WAITING FOR ME TO WASH AND ANOTHER 13 IN THE CHICKEN COOP WHICH I DID NOT COLLECT TODAY. THAT WILL INCREASE WITH TOMORROWS PRODUCTION. I KNOW KATHY WANTED SOME EGGS. WHAT ABOUT PEGGY. I DON’T THINK TERRY EATS EGGS AND CHRIS IS LEAVING TOWN SO I WILL TAKE A FEW DOZEN WITH ME TO FLORIDA TO SHARE WITH OUR FRIEND ANN-MARIE.
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ONLY GET A COPY OF THIS BLOG…CHRIS IS GOING NORTH TO WATCH HER DAUGHTER PLAY FIELD HOCKEY WITH THE COLLEGENT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM.  THEY ARE CURRENTLY UNDEFEATED AND MAY BE ON THE WAY TO ANOTHER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.  CHRIS WILL BE GONE FOR THE DURATION OF THE SEASON (AT LEAST A MONTH).  DAVIS IS BACK TEACHING ECONOMICS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA IN BLUFFTON/HILTON HEAD AND KATHY CONTINUES TO FILL HER DAYS AS A VERY ACTIVE YOGA INSTRUCTOR.   OUR ONE HALF OF THE TWISTER SISTER TEAM AS SEEN RECENTLY ON THE WEATHER CHANNEL, PEGGY, IS BUSY LANDSCAPING HER NEW HOME SITE IN MARSH HAWK PLANTATION AS WELL AS HELPING HER DAUGHTER AND HUSBAND RE-LOCATE TO THE EAST COAST FROM CALIFORNIA.  HER DAUGHTER HAS A JOB WITH THE SAVANNAH, GEORGIA POLICE DEPARTMENT.  I WILL BE LEAVING FOR TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA ON THURSDAY AND BE GONE THROUGH THE WEEKEND.  I WILL BE OVERSEEING THE COOKING OF FROGMORE STEW FOR THE CENTRAL FLORIDA SYMPHONY GUILD FUNDRAISER WHERE I HAVE DONATED FOUR OF MY GICLEE FINE ART PRINTS TO HELP THEM REACH THEIR 2011 GOAL.  GO TO MY WEBSITE (WWW.SEAISLANDPRINTS.COM) TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MY DIGITAL PRINT BUSINESS (MY TRUE LOVE OTHER THAN GARDENING).
I WILL BE BACK TO JOIN WITH THE CO-OP MEMBERS IN OUR CONTINUED GARDENING ADVENTURE.
ONE LAST THING.  PLEASE SEND THIS LINK OUT TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN A GARDEN BLOG.  IF THEY SUBSCRIBE (FREE), THEY WILL GET AN EMAIL NOTICE EVERY TIME A POST IS MADE AND THEY WILL THEN HAVE THE OPTION TO IGNORE THE LINK OR CLICK ON IT TO SEE WHAT WE ARE DOING.  WE WANT THEIR INPUT VIA COMMENTS AS THAT IS A WONDERFUL WAY FOR US TO LEARN MORE ABOUT GARDENING.
